Summary: a dense, engrossing survey of our shared orientatation.
Comment: This book may owe its thrust to Sartre's contemporary M. Merleau-Ponty, but thankfully it is highly contemporary and lacks the post-war verbiage. What the book claims to do, and I tend to agree, is to create a framework to consider how humans work with the world to form perception. The author develops a history, fascinatinating and rather juicy in its layered quality, of how we make the same senses we basically share with animals into the unique human perspective. Our social history is unfolded to show that we are in a partnership with each other and the world to perceive both. The book is refreshing, edifying, and allows an overview of our place as individuals. You may find the book personal, maybe even frustrating, but I consider both those qualities an aspect of a larger, rewarding experience.
