Summary: The Book That Works
Comment: Whatever some people may say--I just know that both of my maternal grandparents followed this book for some 50 years and both lived very long and healthy lives. My grandfather died when he was 93 and my grandmother who just turned 90 is currently traveling in Europe and stands on her head once a day for improved blood circulation. Fasting is not easy but as they say: "no pain no gain." Also, the book goes well with a yoga exercise routine. I am currently looking to buy this book for a friend. Five stars.

Summary: More Spunk than Science - But Read It Anyway!
Comment: I first read Paul Bragg in Russian translation. I was in my mid-teens and my father was "experimenting" with fasting. Bragg's braggish style resonated with my teenage mind and I developed a quick respect for his way-of-the-Fakir-mind-over-matter-cheerleading-inspirational style. I "experimented" with fasts and left it at that. I revisited his writing in my mid-twenties, already in English. I bought this very book and... felt annoyed by his style (I was working on my Master's in Counseling and the "scientist-practitioner" in me yearned for more facts and more empirically stated rationale). I nevertheless once again "experimented" with fasts and left it that. Then, in my early thirties I bought Fuhrman's book on fasting and finally satisfied my "itch" for a scientific presentation of fasting. I resumed my experimentation with fasts and finally integrated them into my lifestyle. While this is the end of my story and one possible intepretation of it might be that while Bragg "didn't do it" for me, Fuhrman "did," another possible interpretation of this story might be that if it hadn't been for Bragg, I might have never picked up Fuhrman. My point is this: Fuhrman is the new Bragg, he is all science and that's great, but there is something to be said about Bragg's larger-than-life braggish adventures. Fasting, while a fast-track to health, is a slow-go kind of experience while you are in it - and I recommend you stock up on some "fasting pulp fiction," on some fun reading about fasting that can help you "cowboy up" on Day 3 of your two-week long water-only-fast.

Summary: A lot of fluff and not many facts
Comment: This book is similiar to a big infomercial for fasting. The authors tell all the great benefits of fasting, but have very little (if any) facts backing up their statements. I like to double-check references and studies that are quoted when reading health/nutrition literature and I was not able to do this, I just had to take the authors' word for it, which sometimes left me wondering.

One statement that left me scratching my head is found on page 17, and reads "Dairy farmers found by giving cows salt blocks to lick, they drink more water. The more water they drink, the more milk produced. But the result is that the average quart of milk contains the extremely high content of 1 1/2 grams of salt per quart! Go past any American school and look at the children. You will be amazed by how many of them are overweight, lack stamina and the spark of youth. Most are heavy drinkers of commercial milk, and most foods they eat contain high concentrations of salt!"

I have no idea how the author correalated high salt intake to obese children?!? Obese children are obese because they eat too much fast food, candy, soda and do not exercise, THEY ARE NOT OBESE BECAUSE THEY DRINK MILK! Yes, they eat a lot of salt, but it's not why they are fat. There are others factors at play.

The majority of the book touts a raw food, vegetarian diet for longevity, health and energy and has nothing to do with fasting whatsoever. Some of the topics include, the downfalls of modern medicine, exercise for energy, get plenty of sunshine and fresh air, eat raw foods as much as possible and of course, stay away from the junk. This is all information that any health conscious person already knows. About the only thing I learned about fasting from the book was that the author fasts one day a week, and up to 10 days four times a year. And only with distilled water.

Other downfalls include the extra large print, like they were trying to stretch the book into more pages than it needs to be. And the constant references to their other line of products, like Apple Cider Vinegar and Olive Oil, neither of which have anything to do with fasting.

If you are totally new to fasting for health, or a couch potato who wants to know more about health and nutrition in general, this book may give you some helpful information all in one place. Otherwise, most of the information can be gleaned by doing a Google search for "fasting."

Summary: Excellent advice for living healthy!!
Comment: I am truly thankful for the information presented in The Miracle of Fasting. I had an ulcerated leg that was destined to be amputated from a lack of circulation. I tried everything to save it. I almost gave up the fight until I read this wonderful book. I put the advice that Patricia Bragg gave in the book into practice and started fasting as much as my body would tolerate. After 5 weeks of a radical diet change and some fasting I noticed some improvement and over time my ulcers disappeared and I'm happy to say I have all 10 toes and 2 happy feet. I am healthier and very VERY thankful for " THE MIRACLE OF FASTING" Buy the book! You'll never be the same!
