Customer Rating: Summary: Good, but much of this is now outdated... Comment: The author does an excellent job at the beginning of the book. A detailed discussion is provided about diet styles and the risks of each.
A very nice presentation follows about the best ways of calculating true caloric needs. The book also branches out and discusses the need for proper sleep, suggestions for nutritious food, the need for a proper spiritual connection, the benefits of light and how to maintain a healthy weight through good exercise.
At the time of writing, most of this information was probably current. I was surprised though, that the studies referred to in the book were not referenced in a bibliography. In fact, I could not find a bibliography, something that is fairly standard now in a "scientific presentation", anywhere in the book.
A number of key points made by the author have since become outdated. Research is now showing that unsaturated fat intake in "excess" of 30 percent may now be beneficial. The exercise suggestions are well meaning, however somewhat out of date.
Finally, when you get to the section which outlines the secret to success, you may find yourself looking for more. Perhaps this is included in one of the author's other books.
It was interesting to note that most "RD"s still adhere to two basic principles, first that you can get everything you need from a good diet. On this first count, this might be true if our fruits and vegetables came from local organic sources and were freshly picked. The second point often made by RDs is that the "RDA" for vitamins (aka Recommended deficiency allowance), is all we really need, despite research to point out otherwise.
Overall, it is a good effort and worth reading if you are frustrated by diet approaches that have not worked in the past. If you are looking for a book that reflects the latest science however, then you either might want to consider a later addition by this author (who presents things in a very clear and interesting manner) or another book.
Customer Rating: Summary: Recycled! Comment: Her first book was full of information and basics for weight loss and this is just a longer, recycled version of that book. Her first was much more to the point about how to become healthy, and this one goes on for ever about why all the other diets don't work. If you have her first, don't bother getting this one.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Answer Comment: Finally a book that tells the truth about all the fad diets there are and will be. This book reveals that all diets are recycled, polished and put back in the main stream, only to leave us sicker and fatter! The answer to true freedom.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Must Have For Yo-Yo Dieters Comment: Finally...a book that tells the truth. I have been on every diet and am tired of it. The book informs you of the truth behind every diet that I've tried. It gives information that makes sense and works. I am thinking about buying this book for eveyone in my family for Christmas this year. Not just for weight loss, but for better eating habits. Thank you Pam Smith for giving me solid ideas and suggestions for eating healthy and improving my good health!
Customer Rating: Summary: How to lose weight without losing health, focus, or control Comment: In The Diet Trap, nutritionist Pamela Smith shows the reader how to lose weight without losing health, focus, energy, or control. She coherently explains why most fad diets are almost guaranteed to fail and the seven top diet myths to avoid and the six weight-loss schemes to pass over. The Diet Trap shows how to unleash the body's natural ability to lose weight and why losing weight depends as much on when you eat as it does what you eat. The Diet Trap is strongly recommended reading for anyone who has gotten caught up on the revolving treadmill of dieting fads and is looking for a safe, sane, and effective method of losing weight and keeping healthy.
