Customer Rating: Summary: Personal Trainer In A Book! Comment: UCLA uses this book as a text book for one of their classes. Simply written, phenomenal information on Exercise description, Sequencing, Rest Intervals, Work Out Scheduling, Etc.... Highly recommend it for someone who doesn't want to guess what workout to do.
Customer Rating: Summary: Build a solid foundation of weight training knowledge Comment: Secrets of Advanced Bodybuilders is a unique book which contains major innovations over other weight training books, but at the same time has some significant drawbacks. The approach to teaching training methodology is clear, concise, and first class. Topics covered include: muscle function, muscle synergy, the concept of fatigue/tension threshold, workout progression, repetition/weight patterns, session duration, & workout frequency. Exercise technique presentation is par excellence utilizing isometric drawings instead of photographs, which is a major improvement over most other weight lifting books. The drawings, both presenting proper and improper exercise execution, afford the reader a better three-dimensional kinesthetic awareness of how each movement is to be performed when compared to photographs. These qualities make this book an excellent guide for the beginner and a useful resource for the seasoned weight lifter. The drawbacks of the book, however, are that it addresses limited muscle groups (not included in this book, but are available in other Health for Life training courses are: abdominal group, calves, trapezius, neck, and forearms). In addition, a new edition has not yet been published that includes the information in that is found in the update and supplement, without which the trainee can be performing exercises that are potentially dangerous for the long-term health of their shoulder girdle and knees. Because of these drawbacks, I can only give this book three stars, otherwise it deserves five.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Best Bodybuilding book I owned Comment: I used this book all the time when I was competing in Bodybuilding. It showed me so many different techniques to use when I lifted and I could feel the results right after each workout. Using proper techniques was extremely important for me because I was a natural bodybuilder and didn't rely on any kind of steriods to bulk up. I even referred to it when I was developing workout plans for friends. It taught me a lot.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent for beginners. Comment: If you've been lifting for years and reading magazines or other books, then you probably already know most of the book. If not, get this book because it will make your workouts much more effective. It teaches you how to perform an exercise with proper technique in order to maximize the effectiveness of the exercise and it explains how to exercise synergistically. (Performing certain exercises in a specified order to increase the overall effectiveness of the workout.) The book does an excellent job of explaining things in a clear, simple format. The book does not cover all muscle groups. The primary ones it leaves out are abs, calves, and forearms. I recommend reading their legendary abs supplement, it is very informative. Problem is, for as short as it is, there are two parts to it sold separately. If you want to take your training to the next level, I suggest reading Warrior Speed. That book explains how to train to increase muscle performance toward a specific goal, whereas this book explains how to position your joints to increase the effectiveness of the exercise.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fair Comment: The HFL company is made primarily for bodybuilders. Notpowerlifters or martial artists. Their books may have sections withspecial exercises for martial artists, they aren't that good. If you are a bodybuiler than this book is for you. Even still the book is not complete. It only covers how to exercise certain muscles. The biceps, triceps, deltiod, hamstrings, quadriceps, and back muscles. Thats it. You have to buy a seperate book for the calves, one for the forearms, one for the rotater cuffs, one for the neck and traps, so you getting ripped off. But however if you are rich enough to spend alot of money on books, go ahead.
